The Board of Corrections (1953-1979) was created by Ala. Act 202, p. 267 (1953) to replace the Department of Corrections and Institutions, created by Ala. Act, 91, p.119 (1939). Its function was to control and operate convict and penal institutions in the state. Detailed ledgers were created monthly, although at least one (1963) was done annually. The ledgers contain information on purchases and expenditures for the physical plants, inmates, and production of penal farms. The ledgers are listed by voucher and also inventoried by category (e.g. wearing apparel, lumber).
